Jana Schultz - Principal
Welcome to Independence! My name is Jana Schultz, and I am honored to be serving my 2nd year as Principal for Independence after having served for 16 years in the role of Assistant Principal at Independence Elementary. Prior to working at Independence, I was a teacher in Francis Howell, Ferguson-Florissant, and in Decatur, Il. Most of my teaching experience was in 3rd or 4th grade. I received my Bachelor’s degree from Lindenwood University, my Master’s degree from University of Missouri-St. Louis, and my Specialist in Educational Leadership from Missouri Baptist. I love the supportive school community at Independence, and look forward to continuing to be a part of it so that I can help our students be successful socially, emotionally, and academically.
Sara Ostmann - Assistant Principal
I’m proud to serve as the Assistant Principal at Independence Elementary. My journey here began 19 years ago as a student teacher, and I’ve been lucky to call Independence home ever since.
Over the years, I’ve had the chance to teach SPED resource as well as 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades. Each role has helped me grow as an educator and has deepened my love for the students, staff, and families who make this school such a special place.
It’s a joy to be part of such a caring school community, and I’m looking forward to another great year at Independence Elementary.
Dr. Connie Buckman - Assistant Principal
I’m proud to continue serving the Independence Elementary community as an Assistant Principal. I’m starting my 25th year in education and have spent my entire career in Francis Howell, serving as a classroom teacher, literacy coach, assistant principal, Director of Adult Learning, and Chief Academic Officer. It has been a joy returning to the elementary level, where I can build strong relationships and stay closely connected to students, staff, and families each day.
I’m most passionate about student engagement, literacy instruction, and supporting the professional growth of educators. I earned my undergraduate degree from Southeast Missouri State, master’s degrees from Lindenwood and Missouri Baptist, and a doctorate from Maryville University. My husband works in a nearby district, our son is a recent FHSD graduate, and our daughter currently attends FHSD. I’m grateful to continue serving the community that means so much to my family and me.
